In the United States, you will definitely encounter diversity; there is no single type of culture, national identity or lifestyle. However, there are some important aspects of American culture that we would like to identify to help you in your adjustment to the United States.
Time is a Resource
Americans think of time as a resource. It is something that can be saved, wasted, spent, used wisely, or given. There is a popular phrase in the United States that “Time is money,” if you end a meeting early “I will give you your time back.” Being on time or using time wisely is considered to be a good use of a very important resource and this is why it is considered a sign of respect. You value others’ time and you don’t want to waste it. Make sure you pay attention to your deadlines, class times, office hours, and scheduled appointments carefully. Reach out to your professors or staff members early if you need an extension or wish to meet with them. Deadlines are rarely flexible without prior communication.
Tipping
Tips or service charges, sometime called gratuities, are not always automatically added to bills in U.S. hotels or restaurants. However, tips are still expected in many situations. Tips are typically expected for:
- Restaurant server
- Bartender
- Bellhops
- Taxi or rideshare driver
- Hair, nail, massage salon
Tips are not expected at places such as ticket offices, food trucks, carry-out restaurants, coffee houses, sporting events, etc. though sometimes you have the option to tip if you like.
